Karen was born and raised
in Philadelphia, Pa. and remembers
attending performing arts classes as a young child at The Heritage House, now
known as The New Freedom Theater located in the heart of North Philadelphia. She
has also studied Fashion at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, Weist Barron School
of Television in New York and was a student in The Master Class, instructed by
the legendary Ozzie Davis. Karen is active in theatre, fashion and the fine
Arts community throughout the Region. She has had the opportunity to work and
or train with some of the most respected names in performing arts and
entertainment. Dr.Walter Dallas, Samm-Art Williams, Robert Anu Hubbard, Kathy
Wickline, Will Brock, John Martin, Domenic Andreoli, the late Ricardo Martin and
legends Mr. Ossie Davis, and August Wilson just to name a few. Karen has been
seen acting and directing in many community and regional theater productions,
commercials and feature films and has worked in many aspects of the industry
including, but not limited to drama, on-camera, on-air and improv instructing,
script supervising, boom and camera operator, craft services and as a
make-up/wardrobe/ set coordinator/set designer/ fashion stylist, talent scout
and theatre Director. In her 7 years as Founder and Director of her own African
American women’s book club “For Da Sista’s” Karen has had the opportunity to
read great literature and develop personal relationships with some of the
worlds famous and well respected African American authors. Karen has interviewed authors such as,Shannon
Holmes, Brenda L Thomas, Karen E.Q. Miller, Salome Thomas El, Solomon Jones,
Gwendolyn A. Remsen and the list goes on.
She is also the Host and Executive Producer, (along with her husband
John Martin & daughter Starr Martin) of her own television talk show
"CELEBRITIES IN THE BASEMENT" which airs 5 times every week on public
access stations, through Comcast & Verizon fios, on Phillycam in
Philadelphia,Pa. and NasdTV in Norristown, Pa, Montgomery county. Karen is a member of the Philadelphia Theatre
Alliance, the NAACP and has volunteered her time and talent with the American
Red Cross, the Salvation Army, St Judes Children's Foundation, North Penn
School District, the York Town Community Organization, Imhotep Charter High
School, The Big Picture Alliance, and Chosen 300(feeding the homeless). This year Karen was a recipient
of two awards: “The Role Model Of
Excellence” award presented by Rick Watson of World Renowned Entertainment
out of Philadelphia,Pa. and “Atlanta’s
Finest,Most Elite Women On The Rise”
award, presented by Kimberly Harris of Women On The Move For Change out of
Atlanta Georgia. Karen was just seen, in back to back stage performances of,
Was it Worth Knowing, written by Ernest Butts and The Repast, written by Bryana
Michelle. She would like to thank all of you for taking this journey with her,
and allowing her to share her talent, and for your ongoing encouragement, love
and support.
